Safety Rules
All of the roads on the race route will be open
to traffic. Watch for traffic and be careful at all turns and road crossings.
Late in the race when you are tired, remember to be extra careful as your
judgment and reaction times will be impaired by fatigue. Flagrant and/or
repeat violations of the following rules will result in disqualification of the
runner:
 |
Run on the left side of the road
facing oncoming traffic unless otherwise directed. |
 |
Cross other roads where indicated
and follow instructions of Road Marshals and other Race Officials.
|
 |
Runners may have personal
handlers and receive aid at any point along the course where it is safe to
do so. |
 |
Handlers must not drive or cycle
alongside the runners. Park at a safe place on the right side of the
road, safely cross the road and hand off drink, food or clothing to the
runner. No parking on the left side of the road! |
 |
Handlers must not park on shoulders of Rte. 21, Rte. 245 and Middle Rd.
See special parking instructions in Race Handbook for these busy roads.
|
 |
Handlers must not park along roads
within 100 yards of aid stations, they are to follow the parking
instructions in the Race Handbook and any instructions of the Aid Station
volunteers. |
 |
Pacers are allowed for
both races after
the Vine Valley Aid Station. Pacers do not pay an entry fee
but must read, sign and turn in the waiver before the
race start. |
 |
Pacers are not allowed to "mule" for their runners, i.e., the runner still
must carry his/her own water bottles, food, spare clothes, etc. |
 |
Runners who exit the Kipp Road Aid Station after 6:00 PM must wear a
reflective vest. A vest will be provided to any runner who needs
one. |
 |
No littering. Each aid station will have a trash bag for your use.
Anyone caught littering will be disqualified. |
Although we will have adequate aid stations,
we strongly recommend you carry a water bottle, especially if temperatures
exceed 70 degrees.
If the weather forecast will be
for High or Extreme Heat Risk, runners will be advised of the risk and
advised to slow their pace and stress hydration. The Race Director
reserves the right to modify the event in case of High or Extreme Heat
Risk or the forecast of an electrical storm within the race course
area during the time of the race.

Ultramarathon Race Tips
 |
Solo runners in both the 50
mile and 50K will want to take it easy
for the first couple of legs. Relax and enjoy the scenery. There are major
climbs between you and the finish. |
 |
50 Mile Runners - Bopple Hill is
a bear. Everyone should walk the first steep bit. When it flattens
out partway up, try running. When it gets steep again, make your
own decision. But, remember to leave something for a long gradual
up once you turn onto Rte. 21. |
 |
Use the out & back section
in Vine Valley to check out your competition... it's an opportunity to see
who you might catch and who is chasing you. |
 |
The climb after you turn onto
Bare Hill Road is almost as steep as Bopple Hill. You should be
prepared to walk this 0.6 mile climb. |
 |
If you trained enough and paced
your race correctly, the last two legs can be your fastest of the race
(applies to both races). |
 |
Want to win the 50 mile?
Wait until after Vine Valley to take the lead. Historically, this
race has rewarded the patient runner who slows down the least in the final
15 miles. |
 |
Want to win the 50K? Make your move after the climb
up Bare Hill.
|
|
Rest Rooms & Showers
 |
Restrooms and showers are
available at Finger Lakes Community College. |
 |
Restrooms are available at Onanda Park
and at the Church in Middlesex.
|
 |
Porta-potties should be available
at the 50K start (boat launch at Woodville) and at public beach in Vine
Valley. |
