Minor updates to the Route Details for 2013 will be documented in May.  Two aid station locations may change slightly to improve traffic safety.

50-Mile Elevation Profile.  Total ascent & descent is approximately 3,500 feet.


50K Elevation Profile.  Total approximately 2,200 feet ascent and 2,100 feet descent.

Elevation profiles are from MapMyRun.  Elevation totals were measured by barometric altimeter (Garmin Edge 305).

2012 Leg Details / Map / Elevation Profile

 Leg 1  4.6 miles
"First 5" - Start to Pump Station
Topography: Mostly Flat, One Small Hill
Start is on Marvin Sands Dr (assemble in bus loop in front of Student Center).  Run (N) to T intersection at Lakeshore Drive.  Turn left (W) and run along shoulder.  At Rte. 364 traffic light, follow instructions of police and road marshals through intersection and onto sidewalk.  Please use the sidewalk along Lakeshore Drive.  Follow Lakeshore Drive as it curves North.  At the Rte. 20 traffic light, turn left and run first on the grass and then on the shoulder of Rte. 20.  After you cross over Sucker Creek Channel, turn bear left down the bank and cross the gully. Bear right and run along the fence to gate at West Lake Drive.  Go through the gate and turn left on West Lake Drive.
Continue on West Lake Drive. Aid Station will be on the left across from the Pump Station.

Handlers:  There is no access to West Lake Road from Rte. 20.  See Race Handbook for how to get from Lakeshore Drive to West Lake Road.  Use the Pump Station parking lot on the right.  Be careful crossing the road to handle your runner.

Leg 2

"Onanda Park" - Pump Station to Onanda Park
Topography: Flat, Then Medium Hills
Continue South on West Lake Drive.  A series of medium hills start at about 6.5 miles. The Aid Station is at Onanda Park just INSIDE the Park Entrance on the LEFT.
Drop Bags will be at the aid station.  There are restrooms in the park.

Handlers:  Drive in the Park Entrance and park in the main parking lot; do not park on West Lake Road or in the park driveway.
 Leg 3 3.7 miles (13.1 total)

Cat 5 Climb
1.93 mi, average 3.1%
"Coye Cutoff" - Onanda Park to Bopple Bottom
Topography: Big Up, Big Down
Continue South on West Lake Road as the road climbs away from the lake. Turn left onto Coye Road. After a long flat, Coye turns right and is very steep for a couple hundred yards. After the big up and a small dip, the grade is more gradual to Seneca Point Road.
Turn left onto Seneca Point Road. After a bit of gradual downhill, the road drops quickly back to the lake shore. Continue past the Hicks Road intersection 0.11 miles to the Aid Station and 2nd Relay Exchange.

Handlers:  Parking is very limited at this station.  If you must stop here, drive past the aid station and park on the wide shoulder on the left.
Leg 4 3.2 miles (16.3 total)

Cat. 3 Climb
1.75 mi, average 6.3%
"Bopple Hill" - Bopple Bottom to Bristol Springs
Topography: Monster Up, Medium Down
Continue South on Bopple Hill Road. After about 1 mile along the lake shore, the fun begins. The Bopple Hill climb (600 feet in 0.8 mile) has three sections: a short but very steep wall followed by a short gentle grade and a long steep wall. At the top, turn left onto Rte. 21. After another half mile of gentle uphill, begin a medium downhill. At T-intersection with Rte. 64, bear left staying on Rte. 21.  The Bristol Springs Aid Station is on your left immediately after the intersection.

Handlers:  New this year:  Do NOT stop on the shoulder of busy Rte. 21 to service your runner.  There's too much traffic and too little shoulder.

At the Bristol Springs Aid Station - Park in the unpaved lots on your right, across Rte. 21 from the aid station.  Be careful crossing the road to handle your runner. 

 Leg 5 2.8 miles (19.1 total)
"Low Road" - Bristol Springs to Boat Launch
Topography: Long Down then Flat
Follow Rte. 21 south for 2.8 miles to the Boat Launch.  Rte. 21 drops back to the lake in about 2.5 miles.  Once back to lake level, you pass through the hamlet of Woodville, a collection of homes and businesses on the lakeshore.  Just south of Woodville, you will find the Boat Launch and the Aid Station on the left.  There should be two portable toilets at the boat launch.

 

Drop Bags will be at the aid station.

Handlers:  New this year:  Do NOT stop on the shoulder of busy Rte. 21 to service your runner.  There's too much traffic and too little shoulder.  At the Boat Launch, there is a small parking lot on the right and the larger boat launch lot on the left.  Watch for runners.

Leg 6 4.9 miles (24.0 total)
50K - 5.0 miles total
"50k Start to Sunnyside" - Boat Launch to Sunnyside Aid Station
Topography: Gently Rolling Roads
From the 50K start, the route is a mostly flat 1.7 miles to Parish Rd which is just past Monica's Pies.  Turn left (E) on Parish Rd.  Continue 0.8 miles on Parish Rd  to T intersection with Rte 245.  Turn left onto Rte 245.  Continue on 245 for 2.3 miles.  Turn left on Sunnyside Rd.  The Aid Station is 0.15 miles ahead at the Trail crossing.


Handlers:  Parking is very limited at this aid station.  If you must stop here, park on the right before the trail crossing or after crossing the bridge over the West River.

Leg 7 4.7 miles (28.7 total)
50K - 9.7 miles total
"West Avenue to Middlesex" - Sunnyside to Church in Middlesex
Topography: Rolling Roads
Continue on Sunnyside about half a mile and bear right at Y-intersection onto West Avenue. Enjoy the gently rolling road.  As you approach the intersection with Rte. 364 in the town of Middlesex, the Aid Station is at the Church on the left. 
Rest rooms are available in the Church.
Drop Bags will be at the aid station.

Handlers:  Park on the right where signs direct you.

50K:  cut-off time limit 2 hours 30 minutes (i.e., 12:30 PM).
50 Mile:  cut-off time 6 hours 30 minutes (i.e., 1:30 PM).

Leg 8 3.9 miles (32.6 total)
50K - 13.5 miles total

1.38 mi, average 3.2%
"Vine Valley Out" - Middlesex to Vine Valley
Topography: Big Up, Big Down
In the town of Middlesex, continue NE out of town on Rte. 364.  There's a pretty good climb to the intersection with S Vine Valley Road.  Take S Vine Valley Road to the small community of Vine Valley. The road has a big down, then rolling hills and then drops steeply to intersect S Lake Road.  At the T intersection, turn left (S) onto S Lake Road.  The Vine Valley Aid Station will be on your right.

Handlers:  New this year - No support vehicles (no cars, trucks or bicycles) allowed on S Lake Rd.  Please do NOT attempt to follow your runner down S Lake Rd to the turnaround.  The road quickly gets narrow, has no shoulders and has two-way runner traffic. 

Please turn Right at the T intersection with S Lake Rd. Go north one short block and turn Left at the Community Center.  Drive down to the General Store just before the Beach Park to wait for your runner to return from the turnaround.  The store may be open.  It has books, gifts, soft drinks and ice cream.  There may be a porta-pottie at the Beach Park.

Leg 9 2.8 miles (35.3 total)
50K - 16.3 miles total
"Vine Valley Back" - Vine Valley to Turnaround and Back Again
Topography: Rolling road along the lake shore
Continue South 1.4 miles to Turnaround at 1173 S Lake Rd.  A marshal will record your arrival with a photo.  Turn around and return to the Vine Valley Aid Station.

Handlers:  New this year - No support vehicles allowed on S Lake Rd.  Please do NOT attempt to follow your runner down S Lake Rd to the turnaround.  The road quickly gets narrow, has no shoulders and has two-way runner traffic. 

Please turn Right at the T intersection with S Lake Rd. Go north one short block and turn Left at the Community Center.  Drive down to the General Store just before the Beach Park to wait for your runner to return from the turnaround.  The store may be open.  It has books, gifts, soft drinks and ice cream.  There may be a porta-pottie at the Beach Park.

Cat. 4 Climb
2.66 mi, average 3.1%
"Bare Hill Climb" - Vine Valley to Top of Bare Hill Climb
Topography: Long Climb Followed by Steep Climb
Continue North for 0.3 miles. Immediately after a steeply-climbing hairpin turn, continue straight on N Vine Valley Rd away from the lake.  The climb on N Vine Valley Road is a moderate stair casing climb.  Walk the steeper bits & run the easier sections.  After climbing about 1.5 miles N Vine Valley dips and Bare Hill Rd intersects on the left.  Turn left (N) on Bare Hill Rd.  The 0.7 mi climb is steep but significantly easier than Bopple Hill.  The Aid Station is at the intersection with Van Epps Road.
Drop Bags will be at the aid station.

Handlers:  Parking is limited at this aid station.  Do NOT park on Bare Hill Rd.  Turn left on Van Epps Road and park on the right side of Van Epps Road.

Leg 11 4.6 miles (42.7 total)
50K - 23.6 miles total
"Twitchell-Green" - Bare Hill to Arnold Road
Topography: Short Up and Longer Gradual Down; Short Up Then Flat, Rolling
Continue N on Bare Hill Road.  At 1.0 miles, turn right (E) on Town Line Road.  At 2.0 miles, turn Left (North) on Twitchell.  At 3 miles, Twitchell curves to the Right (East).  At Rte. 364 intersection, STOP and LOOK BOTH WAYS before continuing straight across 364.  The road name changes to Green.  Green dips and then climbs to intersect with Arnold Road.  The Aid Station is at the intersection.

Handlers:  Park on the right before or after the aid station.

Leg 12 3.7 miles (46.4 total)
50K - 27.3 miles total
"Middle Road" - Arnold to Kipp Road
Topography: Gently Rolling, Trending Downward
Turn Left (North) on Arnold to CR 1 at 1.2 miles.  Zag Right on CR 1 and then an immediate Left onto Conklin. The road dips and then gently climbs to intersect Middle Road.  Turn Left (North) and head for home. The 11th aid station is at the intersection with Kipp Road at 3.7 miles.

Handlers New this year:  Do NOT stop on the shoulder of busy Middle Rd to service your runner.  There's too much traffic and too little shoulder.  Turn off onto an intersecting side road to park.  Then walk back to service your runner.  At the Aid Station, turn onto Kipp Road and park on the right.  Do not park on Middle Road.

Leg 13 3.7 miles (50.1 total)
50K - 31.0 miles total
"Homestretch" - Kipp Road to Finish
Topography: Mostly Flat Then Steep Downhill with final Short Climb to Finish
The route continues North on Middle Road to T intersection with CR 18. Turn Left onto CR 18.  Take care... the traffic may be heavy for the next mile to Lincoln Hill Road. STOP AND LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE TURNING RIGHT ONTO LINCOLN HILL.  Ignore the Dead End sign and proceed down Lincoln Hill.  At the traffic barrier, go around either end and proceed down the mown grassy trail to Marvin Sands Drive.  Turn Right and follow Marvin Sands Drive past the CMAC.  Stay on Marvin Sands past the bus loop and turn Right onto Lot A access road.  Sprint, the finish is straight ahead.

Handlers:  Don't turn off CR 18 onto Lincoln Hill.  Lincoln Hill is a dead-end road.  See Race Handbook for how to get from CR 18 back to Finish.
