Prior Canandaigua Ultras:  The first reported run most of the way around Canandaigua Lake was a 60K in 1982.  Charlie Sabatine (7th overall in 1982) revived the event as a 40-mile "mini-ultra" held from 1994 to 1998.  Tom Perry ran the "mini-ultra" in 1995-1997.  In 2003, Charlie Sabatine, Rick Cronise and Tom Perry brought the race back in its current form as a full 50 miles around the lake.  Click here for contemporary race reports from Ultrarunning magazine.

How do you get around the lake in 40 miles?  Part of the answer you skip all the miles through the City of Canandaigua by starting on West Lake Rd at the Canandaigua City Limits.  The mini-ultra also took a shorter route around the south end of the lake by using Parish Rd and then, from Sunnyside, followed a creative route involving private drives and a steep gully to get to South Lake Rd, which cut off several more miles in getting to Vine Valley.

Race Director's Summary
About four hours into the race the light rain finally stopped and the skies cleared for a cool and sunny afternoon. The combination of cold rain and a half mile added to both races by a detour resulted in slightly slower times by returning runners. Masters and Veteran runners were dominate in both races.

Joe Jaffe (age 45 from Geneva) prevailed over William McGovern (age 50 from Marathon) after the two ran together for 40 miles. McGovern faded a bit in the last 10 to finish in 7:25:36. Justin Dore (age 40 from Bethesda, MD) was closing but fell short, finishing 3rd overall in 7:28:44. Scott Stephens (age 33 from Ottawa, ON), running in his first ultra, finished 4th and won the Open category in 7:32:26. Graeme Melrose (age 18 from Virginia Beach, VA) became the youngest finisher with his 7th overall place in 8:43:44.

Elizabeth Hurdman (age 52 from Toronto, ON) joined the relatively elite group of women over 50 who has won an ultra. Her new Veterans record is almost three hours faster than the prior mark. Angie Hawley (age 42 from Mississauga, ON) was second woman and the Masters winner in 9:03:30. She was closely followed by Anne Marie Prewitt (age 40 from Eliot, ME), second in Masters with a 9:08:41 finish. Dana Casanave (age 28 from Leesburg, VA) was the first Open woman in 9:28:35. Notably, Leslie Hale (age 57 from Houston, TX), second in the Veterans category in 9:40:16, was more than two hours under the prior record and is now tied as the older woman finisher of the 50 mile..
