Race Director's Summary
Race day was a perfect October day in the Finger Lakes… a crisp, clear dawn warming to a comfortable 70 degrees in mid-afternoon… ideal for the volunteers and only a little too warm for the runners doing the full fifty miles around the lake. Fall foliage was at peak colors.

In the five previous runs around the lake, it has not paid to lead the race from the start. The ultimate winner has always taken the lead somewhere after the 50 km mark in the Village of Middlesex. This year broke the rule. Ed Housel, co-winner of the 2007 Western New York Ultra Runner of the Year, had a gap on the pack by five miles and extended the gap to a couple minutes over the climbs of Coye Cutoff and Bopple Hill.

Dan Dominie was the first to challenge for the lead, pulling even by Sunnyside at 27 miles and reaching the 50 km mark with a slim 24-second lead. But it was not to be… over the big climb out of Middlesex and the descent back to the lake in Vine Valley, Housel moved back into the lead as Dominie slowed, gradually dropping back into the company of Todd Baum and William McGovern.

On the climb to Town Line Road Matthew Chaffin mounted an even more serious challenge to Housel’s lead. Chaffin took back two minutes in the three miles to Town Line Road and caught Housel. The two arrived together at Kipp Road at 46 miles. Again it was not to be… Chaffin, slowed by nausea, dropped five minutes behind over the remaining four miles. Housel ran strongly to the finish for his first race win.

On the women’s side, Jill Perry led from the start in a beautifully paced effort, averaging 9:20 to the 50 km mark and slowing only slightly to average 9:25 for the full 50 miles. This pacing effort was topped by Jerome Wojnicki who ran negative splits, averaging 10:30 to 50 km and speeding up enough over the remaining miles to average 10:28 for the full 50 miles around the lake.

Race Director's Summary
John Ehntholt (2:48 Boston Marathon) and Mark Andrews (local elite runner in his first ultra) went out hard from the gun, gapping the next fastest runners by more than a minute per mile. The two ran side-by-side over the early rollers, over the stair-step climbs of the Coye Cutoff and back down to the lakeshore, arriving together at the start of Bopple Hill. This signature climb gains 600 feet in 0.8 mile with a maximum grade of 23 percent.

Ehntholt and Andrews ran together on the opening wall and the following short false flat. When the hill again pitched up to 20+ percent, Ehntholt switched to power walking and wished Andrews well as he continued running the remainder of the climb. To his surprise, Ehntholt quickly caught back up to Andrews on the run-in to the Bristol Springs station at 17 miles, only to see Andrews drop out due to severe cramping. Ehntholt ran on, finishing the 50 kilometers in a race record 3:43:21.

Daniele Cherniak (nine-time member of the US 100 km team) was equally dominant in the women’s category. She started fast, leading the women’s category from the start, running Bopple Hill and moving into second overall by the Rte. 21 aid station at 22.7 miles. Cherniak hardly slowed over the remaining miles, finishing in a race record 4:22:57. Cherniak now holds the women’s record for both the 50-mile and 50-kilometer Can Lake 50 races.
