year? Team ODR, five over-40 guys from the Oven Door Runners (an informal running group in Rochester) blew away the course record by almost 40 minutes with a Masters Men record 6:08:30. The triumph of experience over youth would have been a great story but that wasn't fast enough to take the race. The Social Scientists came up from Ithaca to defend their title with a couple new runners and a faster pace. The Cornell scholars held on against a fast closing Team ODR to prevail in 6:05:48, more than 42 minutes faster than 2003. That wasn't enough either. Megan Hyland of Rochester put together a team with 5K speed to burn: Matt's Girlies. The four young women consistently run 18 and 19 minute 5Ks and Matt has 17 minute credentials. How would flat 5K speed and twenty-something youth translate to 50 miles with 3500' of gain and loss? As it turned out, the answer is "very well." Matt's Girlies broke the old record by more than an hour with a 5:45:13, a new Open Mixed record. But even that wasn't enough. Team White & Clark, three older runners from the Buffalo area, showed they were serious when Steve White opened with a 6:16 average for the first 10.2 mile leg. Trevor White flew with a 6:08 average for the big climb up the Coye Road hill and back down to the lake. Jim Clark made the 800' Bopple Hill climb and drop into Bristol Springs in a strong 7:20 average, giving the team a 10-minute lead over Matt's Girlies at 17.1 miles. They scarcely slowed as they extended their lead to 23 minutes at the finish. Their time of 5:21:46 (6:26 average pace) was more than 1:26 faster than last year's best. What will it take to win in 2005? Which team will be the first under 5 hours?
